A Parting of the Ways - Chapter One

The door opened and one after the other the women, all 20 of them, entered each looking about.  Some speculated with each other, others did so with their own thoughts as they walked about, heels clicking on the hardwood floor.  Finally the chatting and the din died away and they each took a chair arranged in a semi circle and waited passing the time in light chat with each other who had only met each a few hours previous.

The bang of something metallic against the inside of the door brought all eyes and attention toward it.  A metal pole wedged inside held the door open a crack and then more and more as it pulled it back on the hinges and a body jammed inside part way replacing the pole as an opening.  A second pole dragged across the floor, the rubber end skipping as it went until it stuck and held and the woman made on long lunge inside the room, barely avoiding the door hitting her backside as it closed.

“All the high tech gadgets you could ever wish for but can we install assisted door openers, no,” the very beautiful brunette woman said as she strode on her two walking sticks into the middle of the women.

“Well this certainly brings back memories.  Welcome to all of you and congratulations on passing the initial set of interviews, however clandestine they may have been administered.  I remember being all excited, I was weeks away from finishing my Masters Degree and wondering what the hell I was going to do with a MFA as I wandered around the recruiting centre at school.  After I while I had narrowed down my vast prospects to going back to school and becoming a high school art teacher or looking forward to an exciting career in the fast food industry,” she said as she pivoted on her sticks and looked at all the young beautiful faces.  “Well I won’t bore you with the details as I’m sure we have similar experiences after that, needless to say COIL found me as they intended to all along, me and many others, some made the grade, most didn’t, you cast a wide net to catch the fish you want and those who want to be caught which brings us all back here to this point in time.”

She dragged herself over to the one free chair and sat down as lightly as she could but there was still a very audible scrape of the legs on the floor as the chair jumped.

“By way of introduction my name is Claire Baxter, ex- active COIL agent as you probably guessed.  The powers that be here always think its best, and I agree with them, that prospective recruits get to see what they could be in for.  This life isn’t all cocktail dresses, fast cars and exotic locations, although it is that, but it’s also this,” Claire said tapping her legs with one of the sticks and its worse and that’s what I’m here for to tell you the truth.”

“As I opened with, I was in your place, in this very room faced with the same choice you’re going to have to make shortly, I made mine and have no regrets, but that’s me, not you.  My group was 20 women also, 15 chose to continue, 5 dropped out or couldn’t get past the training leaving 10 who made it all the way.  I’m the only one left alive from those ten, think about that, on average only one of you will be alive in less than 7 years, mull that over, let that affect your decision when the time comes.”

Claire scanned the faces, the looks varied as they had when she was in their place, some looked gob smacked already, others unfazed and some were hard to tell.

“Now what awaits you, three years of the hardest physical and mental work you’ve ever done, day after day.  Classes on everything from martial arts, tailored exclusively to you, how to dress and act, weapons training, language skills, computer skills, sexual skills just to name a few.”

She watched faces again, thoughts of James Bond and Matt Helm lovelies running through minds no doubt she mused to herself.

Should you chose to stay and are successful in training you will have a cover and a new career created for you.  That person will exist in this reality, she has job, bank accounts the whole works.  This is the side you show the world, your family and most importantly your cover on missions.  Yes as I said your family, they must never know what it is you really do, I’m lucky in way, I have none that I had to lie to at Christmas or birthdays or Dawali ,” she said looking at a young woman from India.  “Or at any other occasion, over and over again.  That is also part of the price you pay, your life is a lie to all except your fellow agents and COIL.”

“Now on the positive side of the ledger, the money is very good, as are the clothes, cars, locations, most times and the experiences.  The rush of being on a mission, of surviving by your wits and skills and strength, the cunning you employ, the sexual thrill of being a completely in control female who commands with the will of her body and whisper of her voice, that is riches beyond all,” Claire smiled.

“Let me expand a little on that last remark.  Some of you may be wondering what your doing in this room with all these beautiful other people and conversely some of you may be thinking, what’s she doing in here.  I can assure each and every one of you that you’re all beautiful, some of you just don’t know it yet and some of you do, but not to worry that will be beaten out of you and replaced with something far more sexy that you can imagine, its simple confidence, not over confidence, just what I said, confidence, when used properly it is unbeatable in both body and mind.  This universe is littered with beautiful dead agents, pretty woman are a dime a dozen, open a magazine, go on the internet there everywhere.  But, beautiful woman with deadly skills and the confidence to act, now they are rare, that’s what COIL wants,” Claire explained.

“They obviously miscalculated with her,” one young woman said from the side of her mouth to a woman on her left.

“What was that you said Miss?”  Claire said her head down.

There was dead silence in the room for about half a minute before Claire Baxter grabbed her sticks and struggled to pull herself up.  A young recruit next to her tried to help and Claire exploded.

“Get your hands off of me, I’m not a cripple!” she yelled while forcing herself upright and pounding awkwardly across the short space to the woman who spoke.

“Get up right now!” Claire icy voice chilled the room instantly.

The woman made no moment.  Claire balanced on one stick while the end of the free one pushed into the woman’s sternum then up to her throat.

“I said get up right now or I’ll ram this pole right through you bitch.”

“I have a 3rd Dan in Tang Soo Do,” the woman said confidently.  “It would not be much of a fight.”

“Well my legs are shaking,” Claire said sarcastically to a few giggles around the room as she removed the stick and the woman got up.

You asked for it,” the young recruit said and went for a spinning back heel kick in a flashing motion.

Several recruits rushed to her aid but were ordered back by her waving hand and returned to their seats.

“Had enough for now or do you want another lesson?”

“You can walk!  You’re supposed to be a cripple!” the young woman screamed as Claire pressed her knee into her shoulder blades and held her arms by the thumbs.

“Yes I can walk and no I’m not supposed to be cripple, you just supposed I was one and therefore easy prey.  Rule one ladies; never trust your eyes or what other people want you to believe.  Now Hannah Atherton relax, its over,” Claire said as she slowly released the woman and waited curiously to see her reaction, which would tell her a great deal about her. Claire held out her hand with a kind face and Hannah took it right away, was pulled up and took her seat again.

“I think we should move on to your part in all this.  Some of you have probably already figured out what the doors on the outside wall mean, one door for every one of you as you can see.  Simple actually, you each go behind one of those doors; they will self lock behind you.  There is another door at the far end of the small room you’ll find yourself in.  Should you wish to leave exit through the far door.  You will be escorted away from here and emerge in the city unharmed of course free to go on with your life.  Should you choose to join COIL for the moment and try the training simply stay in the room and a wait for the sound of the door unlocking and come back in the room.  Those of you who choose to leave can say anything you want about your experience here, really who’s going to believe you, secret spy organisation recruiting beautiful woman for deadly exotic missions.  Have fun with that or better yet start a Yahoo Group about it,” Claire laughed and then motioned the girls to move to a door and went inside.

The main door opened and in walked Sharon Sharpe, Head of Women’s Ops.

“Went a little off script,” she said.

“Its those acting classes I took at university, I never got to play the lead you know, arrested development,” Claire quipped.

“How many do you think will come back after a performance like that, its not a game for your personal amusement or haven’t you learned that yet given all you and this organisation has been through for you,” Sharon said in a motherly stern tone.

“I never asked to be saved, but I’m glad I was, I’m grateful for the friends that did so much for me and thankful it all worked out.  I’m even glad to be here for you to scold me Sharon,” Claire said as she slipped her hand into the others.

Sharon melted at that, she loved Claire, she had been her trainer and mentor and still was, but she had to say the rest of her piece.  “Even for the way certain things worked out?  You know I’ve got scattered intelligence about certain members of your rescue team, the official ones and the ones they picked up along the way, that alarm me in ways.”

“There are a few people I trust totally, one is holding my hand, one is my distant relative and the other is my surrogate mother and whomever they trust I do as well.  It’s not easy, but I’m working on getting there.  The question is do you trust me enough to let me get there?” Claire said looking up.

“Of course, but wolves have a habit a closing the circle when two many questions go unanswered,” Sharon said back.

“Wolves have their enemies as well,” Claire offered and looked away.  “In answer to your question, I bet all return, this is an interesting group, about time the criteria was undated with input from real agents.”

Claire stood up as she heard the bolts turn closed on the doors and the recruits entered back into the room.

“Like I said, a special group, now go welcome your new kids into the family, part of my family is having high tea and have requested my attendance,” Claire as she kissed Sharon on the cheek, made the rounds congratulating the new recruits then passed by her boss one final time.

“Save Hannah for me,” she whispered and was gone.
